Newcomer / Intro The Elite: Dangerous Acronym Guide

How about DVT (deep vein thrombosis)? One possible hazard of not using a DC (docking computer), which gives you the chance to stand up and regain some circulation in your legs while your ship is docking?

Chapter 4 upcoming release, I see reference to a new FSS.

What is this acronym?

Something surface scanner I presume.

I know what it's referring to, but I have not heard the full name.

I think it might mean Filtered Spectral Scanner since the x-axis is labelled Filtered Spectral Analysis.

It could be analysis by examining Frequency Selective Surface properties:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_selective_surface

... since they are sending out a pulse of energy and then looking at what comes back then maybe they are determining what is out there by the reflection of certain frequencies?

(since the distances involved preclude EM radiation due to transmission-time requirements I suspect we are looking at handwavium-pulses ;) )

On release we see FSS stands for Full Spectrum System (scanner).

A new updated list somewhere?
I am happy to start and maintain a new list/thread if there is enough interest. The OP does not appear to be keeping this one up to date.

So, if you would like to see a new list, please either say so here or send me a PM (that's private message ;)). Please indicate in which forum section you think it should be - Newcomers, Guides and Tutorials or DD. Also, my intention would be to split the list into two sections - one specific to ED and the other general forum/internet abbreviations. Obviously I would have to ask the mods/Brett if they can make it a sticky.

pssst, it's a kind of magic :)

Edit: I think more are viewing such a list than one would expect - I would appreciate an update - this edit is for the OP, not for you, Para.

As I browse through the forums I sometimes stumble across a new acronym and have to figure out what it means, so I'm sure it's a steep learning curve for newcomers.

Well fret no more, here is the ultimate acronym guide in all its glory, I will keep it up to date and with the help of the community will keep it complete!

Probably so. I've never been much on acronyms and always felt the need to spell stuff out and at 75 or so words a minute typing it's never been an issue. My computer days extend way back to 1976 when I first was exposed to a FADAC <--- my first computer acronym. Field Artillery Directional Aiming Computer.

Not to be confused, which I just did, with FADEC - Full Authority Digital Engine Control, which is how pilots run modern jet engines.

I like an acronym which I got from soldiers - SNAFU - situation normal, all f..ked up. I found this really funny.

Looks like were falling behind in updates. I'm no n00b but this list is something that could have made my return from a break not so, "Huh? What are these kids talkin about now?"

I have come across the acronym ATR and could not figure out what it means.
But the commanders using it, it seemed to come natural to them. Something to do with notority and police following you.
Here is the link.

What is the ATR?

The Advanced Tactical Responders are heavily armed security ships. They are tasked with stopping high-Notoriety commanders, either by forcing them out of a system or destroying them.
