Which API specifically are you after?

If you are referring to the game itself I am under the impression that the “api” is via the jornal files created during the game (happy to be corrected).

Reference to the journal file can be found at the very top of this thread.

Hope this helps

No, the journal files and the cAPI (Companion API) are two separate entities. The cAPI is a 'web requested' json which contains limited data on the commander, shipyard, current ship, current star system, current station (when docked), etc. Unlike the journal files, cAPI is not event driven.

It is most useful for obtaining current station market and outfitting data, and is highly leveraged by apps such EDMC, EDDI, ED Discovery, etc. The cAPI and the before mentioned apps are how sites such as EDDB are populated and updated.

Most recently, cAPI is using OpenAuth PKCE authentication for access to data, so the price of admission (knowledge of OpenAuth) has gone up a bit. The upside of migrating to OpenAuth is allowing console commanders to forward their cAPI data to a trusted repository, such as EDSM. This is a win-win as EDDB (and other 'listeners') are getting even more up-to-date data.
